Thanks, Jonny, much appreciated

I'm feeling a little self-congratulatory this morning, having been ranked #11 in Technobabble 2.0's analyst bloggers table, (and, it seems, the highest-placed wireless analyst) courtesy of Jonny Bentwood at Edelman.

Thinking about it, though, I feel a little bit uneasy too, as I don't really identify myself as a "blogger" as such. I write here for a few reasons - it gives me a chance to put an analytical stake in the ground on topics I'm opinionated about, but that I won't get a chance to write up in a full report. I often find writing posts a good way to crystallise my thoughts on various topics. And quite frankly it generates a significant amount of business from both new and existing clients, which means I can justify the time quite easily. Plus I often learn a lot from the comments on my posts.

But I eschew much of the trendier blogging tools and "furniture". I can't be bothered with things like Digg or del.icio.us or tag clouds, I'm using a boring off-the-shelf Blogger template, and I'm terrible about updating basic things like external links. I've never looked at the Technorati site until today, so I don't even know what the significance of Jonny's use of it in his ranking is. I'm not even that bothered about publicising the blog to widely - my perception is that it has a smallish but self-selected group of "the right people" reading it.

So maybe I should use this opportunity to ask for some feedback: does anyone actually care that about all those cool up-to-the-minute blogosphere features? Could I make the blog easier to use? Or is it just "all about the content" and it's fine the way it is?

  1. Leave it just the way it is. I don't miss the extra blogging bells and whistles. The content and perspective is what I appreciate.

  2. Most of the time, I read your posts with a RSS reader, so I can't even see your "boring template"; I can go on living well enough without things like tag clouds or links to Digg. The content is what matters.

I agree with the others. it ain't broke, so don't try to fix it.

Other sites like SMSTextNews, Newswireless.net, etc are good for the daily quick digest of stuff, but you, Tomi Ahonen, Ajit Jaokar et al are great for considered pieces.

Would like to see more slow-burn campaigns, like the real case for WiMax, IMS, etc from all perspectives - CTO's, finance, consumer etc. Ask the hard questions of VC's who pump money in every direction in the hope of a hit.

    Cheers,

    Mike

  4. Congratulations. And I don't miss 'extra 'features' here, (but have no objection to them).

I scan the RSS feed, then open the website in a browser tab ...to read/tag/print later. Template isn't very print-friendly, and that's the only slight niggle.

RSS reader only as well, don't recall having seen your template before but sure I must have. Never visited Technorati etc - that name always made me think it was full of self-important people who make me dislike blogging in general... they probably use words like 'asymptote' a lot in the context fo the future.

RSS reader here too, all other bells and whistles are unncessary, good blogs with good content like yours naturally surface on the top of the blogosphere w/o the need of any social ranking...

And thanks for the "right people" comment, made me blush for a moment :)
